Why Do I Need My Tooth Extracted?

Tooth extractions are usually required when a tooth is too damaged or unhealthy to save it with alternative dental procedures. Tooth extractions also may be required if you have wisdom teeth that are not growing in properly, and are causing pain or a high risk of other complications. At Eclipse Smiles, we’re here to help with gentle, pain-free extractions in Glenpool. Contact us now to schedule a consultation with our Glenpool dentist, and see if a tooth extraction is the right way to eliminate your pain and restore your oral health.

Did you Know?

Tooth extractions are always our last resort option. When possible, Dr. Andrus will try to save your tooth with alternative treatments, such as a root canal and a dental crown for an infected tooth.

Basic Extractions

Basic extractions are usually recommended for damaged and infected teeth. In this procedure, Dr. Andrus will clean and numb your mouth, then pull your tooth out with a special pair of dental forceps. The process is very simple, and takes only a few minutes per tooth.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

The wisdom teeth grow into the mouth between the ages of 17-25. This is a lot later than the other teeth. And if you don’t have room in your mouth for your wisdom teeth, they can cause serious oral health issues like pain, changes in how your teeth fit together, and more. Wisdom tooth extractions may be recommended in this case.

Sedation For Your Comfort

We offer both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. We know that tooth extractions can be intimidating, so our goal is to keep you feeling safe and comfortable during the entire process.

The Tooth Extraction Treatment Process

Here’s what you can expect when receiving treatment:

Cleaning and preparing your mouth

First, Dr. Andrus will clean and numb the treatment area. We also offer sedation options to keep you feeling comfortable during the tooth extraction process.

Extracting your tooth

Next, Dr. Andrus will loosen your tooth in the socket using a “dental elevator.” Once the tooth is loose, he will use a pair of dental forceps to grab the tooth and pull it out of the socket.

Cleaning and suturing

After your tooth is pulled, Dr. Andrus will clean the area and suture your tooth socket shut to promote healing and reduce the risk of infection. Then, he will repeat the extraction process if you’re having multiple teeth pulled.

Recovery and follow-ups

You’ll be sent home to heal. It only takes a day or two to get back to your normal routine, but it can take up to two weeks to fully recover. Make sure to follow Dr. Andrus’s instructions, and come back as scheduled for any follow-ups.

Frequently Asked Questions

What If I Don’t Remove My Wisdom Teeth?

arrow_f8-arrow_up-forward-direction-upload

As long as they're healthy and fit properly into your mouth, there’s no need to remove your wisdom teeth, and nothing bad will happen if you leave them in place. Plenty of people are able to keep their wisdom teeth without any issues. However, if your wisdom teeth are not healthy, they should be removed.

Leaving unhealthy wisdom teeth in place can cause serious pain, damage the surrounding teeth, increase your risk of oral infections, and may require emergency dentistry. And the longer you wait to have them extracted, the more difficult it may be to remove them. If you’re worried about your wisdom teeth and think extractions may be right for you, we recommend visiting Eclipse Smiles to see Dr. Andrus for a diagnosis.

What Is The Tooth Extraction Recovery Process Like?

arrow_f8-arrow_up-forward-direction-upload

After your extraction, Dr. Andrus will give you a set of instructions to follow as you recover from your treatment. You’ll need to take things easy, eat liquid foods, and take other steps to manage pain, swelling, and discomfort. You’ll also need to avoid brushing the site directly for a few days.

You can get back to school or work within just a day or two. After about a week, your mouth will feel much more normal, and you can usually reintroduce most foods to your diet and brush normally. Most patients are fully healed within about two weeks.
