What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is a procedure used to treat infected or inflamed teeth, which can occur when decay has penetrated deep into the roots of your teeth. During the root canal treatment, the dentist will remove any bacteria or infection from the affected area and replace it with a filling material to strengthen the tooth.

The Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

Icon

Pain relief

Root canal therapy can help relieve the pain caused by an infected or damaged tooth. The procedure removes the infected pulp, which is the source of the discomfort, and your dentist will ensure you're comfortable throughout the process.

Saving your natural tooth

Root canal therapy helps preserve your natural tooth, allowing you to maintain your smile and avoid extraction. Keeping natural teeth is always the best option for oral health.

Icon

Efficient chewing

By saving your tooth, root canal therapy ensures you can continue to chew your food efficiently and enjoy all your favorite meals without any problems.

Protects adjacent teeth

An untreated infected tooth can cause damage to the surrounding teeth and gums. Root canal therapy helps prevent this by addressing the infection and keeping your other teeth healthy.

The Root Canal Process

Here’s what you can expect when receiving treatment:

Consultation and X-ray

Before the procedure, Glenpool dentist Dr. Chris Andrus will examine your tooth and take an X-ray to assess the extent of the damage or infection and determine if root canal therapy is the best course of action.

Anesthesia

To ensure your comfort during the procedure, the dentist will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area around the affected tooth.

Accessing the Tooth

Dr. Andrus will need to access your infected tooth. The top part of your tooth (the crown) will be removed so that Dr. Andrus can get to the root of what's happening using special tools.

Cleaning

Dr. Andrus will thoroughly clean and disinfect the root canal to eliminate any remaining bacteria and prevent reinfection.

Filling and Sealing

The dentist will fill the now-empty root canals with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha, which helps to seal and protect the canals. He will place a temporary or permanent filling in the access hole to seal the tooth and prevent contaminants from entering the root canals.

Follow-up Appointments

Your dentist may schedule follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process and ensure that the tooth and surrounding tissues are healthy and infection-free.
